t’s becoming more and more prevalent that brands are taking advantage of creators. Namely I’m talking about photographers and videographers but this may apply to many industries. I’m not sure if the fault is completely with brands, or if it’s shared with creators who don’t know better, or know their own value.
I’m seeing things like “Ambassador Programs” pop up on platforms like Instagram where brands will offer discounts to creators in exchange for creative services. This appears great on the surface since creators are getting a sweet discount - but it’s not great.
Don’t get me wrong, discounts are great - for consumers. But creators are producers who need to pay bills, take care of their families, etc.
How It Hurts
Acceptance of programs like these from creators is harmful to themselves as it means their work is not accruing the value it should.
Acceptance of programs like these from some creators means there’s always somewhere else for a Brand to go when they learn you value your work.
Prior to using content that is not yours, ask the creator for permission. If they want to give you content for free, that’s their choice. Or if they want to charge you, that’s their choice and yours to pay if you’d like to use their content.
Know your worth. Sit down when you have a moment and work up your expenses, determine what you need to make enough profit to match your expertise. Then learn that in the back of your mind so that you can confidently price your projects.
